What Is Professional Liability Insurance?

Professional liability insurance, also known as malpractice insurance, provides financial protection if you are accused of negligence, errors, or omissions in the course of patient care. It typically covers legal defense costs, settlements, and judgments related to covered claims.

Why It Matters

Employer coverage is designed to protect the organization first

Individual coverage protects your personal license and reputation

Coverage can follow you if you change jobs or work in multiple settings

If you rely solely on employer coverage, you may not have protection for services outside of that role or for certain board or regulatory matters.

Nurse Practitioners

Nurse Practitioners often practice with a high level of autonomy, diagnosing conditions, prescribing medications, and managing patient treatment plans. As scope of practice expands, so does exposure to liability risk.

What Coverage Can Include

  • Legal defense costs provided in addition to policy limits
  • Protection for malpractice claims related to patient care
  • Licensing board defense and regulatory support
  • HIPAA defense coverage
  • Portable protection that follows you across roles and practice settings
  • Occurrence coverage for incidents that happen during your policy period

Having your own policy can be especially important if you moonlight, work locum tenens assignments, practice independently, or change employers.

For NP Practice or Business Owners

If you own or operate a practice, your risk exposure extends beyond direct patient care. Business owners may need protection for both clinical services and business operations.

Additional considerations may include

  • Coverage for the entity itself
  • Protection for employed clinicians
  • General liability coverage for slip and fall or third-party claims
  • Business personal property coverage
  • Cyber liability and data breach protection

Having the right structure in place helps safeguard your practice, employees, and financial investment.

Physician Assistants

Physician Assistants practice in a wide range of specialties and clinical environments. Even when working under physician supervision, PAs can be named individually in malpractice claims.

What Coverage Can Include

  • Legal defense coverage separate from policy limits
  • Protection for claims arising from professional services
  • Licensing board and regulatory defense
  • HIPAA proceeding coverage
  • Coverage that remains with you if you change employers
  • Occurrence form coverage for incidents during the policy term

Individual professional liability insurance helps ensure your interests are protected, regardless of your employer’s policy structure.

For PA Practice or Business Owners

As laws evolve and more PAs take on ownership or leadership roles, liability exposure may increase. If you own, co-own, or manage a practice, your coverage needs may be more complex.

Business owners should consider

  • Coverage for the practice entity
  • Protection for supervising or collaborating arrangements
  • Coverage for employed providers
  • General liability and premises exposure
  • Cyber liability for patient data
  • Coverage for equipment and business property

A tailored insurance solution can help protect both your professional services and your business operations.
